K          “The envelope please.  . . .  This year, the ‘Cameo In Courage’ Award is awarded to . . . John Joseph Mearsheimer.  The citation states:  ‘John Mearsheimer has consistently demonstrated intellectual courage by challenging widely accepted narratives in international politics, even when doing so invites intense criticism.  He applies his realist theories rigorously, speaking truth to power rather than tailoring his arguments for popularity or political convenience.  By publicly defending controversial positions, such as his analysis of U.S. foreign policy and the power of the Israel lobby, he exemplifies a rare commitment to honesty and scholarly integrity.’”

J          “I may not agree with him all the time.  That said, he is most deserving of the award at this time.  After serving in the military, he served and is serving the country as an academic and a public intellectual.  He knows that his statements make him a possible target for assassination.  When others would retire and play golf, he remains on duty.”
